    The network engineer position is also sometimes referred to as the Microsoft, Redhat, Cisco, senior systems administrator, network analyst, infrastructure engineer, WAN administrator, network designer or network architect. Whatever it is called, however, the position of network engineer requires the individual to design and manage the organization's LAN and WAN networking equipment. Some of the duties of the network engineer include choosing or recommending hardware and software solutions to meet the needs of the organization, implementing those software and hardware solutions, testing the equipment and ensuring the prompt resolution of any issues which may arise. Other duties of the network engineer include analyzing the business needs of the organization, recommending and implementing the network infrastructure required to meet those needs, maintaining that network solution and supporting the solution as it moves forward. The role of the network engineer often overlaps with related positions, such as network technician or systems administrator.

The salary levels of network engineers and related positions will vary according to local market conditions, experience levels, certification, training and other factors, but many network engineers can expect to attain salary levels of between $60,000 and $80,000 per year.
